Modern Marvels

I'm sure many of you heard about how on July 4, NASA's spacecraft Deep Impact shot a comet flying out in space, creating a huge explosion and taking some spectacular pictures.  The Deep Impact website says that impact velocity was 23,000 mph.

Isn't it so amazing what people have accomplished?  We live in a time of technological wonders.

As civilization has progressed, there have been a number of revolutionary ideas and accomplishments.  Like the invention of the printing press, or the modern understanding of medicine.

One could say that thousands of years of civilization's advancements culminates to the modern world we live in today, the pinnicle of human achievements.  We've put a man on the moon and harnessed the power of the atom.  We watch television programming that is beamed down to us from satellites that orbit the Earth and take digital pictures with our cell phones.

And we eat In-N-Out burgers.

Ah yes, good times....

I was just thinking about that the other day! Even with things like TV...these crazy little boxes that play moving pictures...they're so normal to us now, but just think that before this century, and for thousands maybe millions of years before that, no one ever had TVs! We think that's crazy, but when you think about it, WE'RE the crazy ones!!!! ahhhhhh!!!!!

In-N-Out is the best! hey, do you really use 4 ketchup cup-containers for your fries?

Nah, usually just 2. Sometimes though, I'll be down to the small fries at the end, and they're short, so it's not as comfortable to dip them into the nearly exhausted cups, because you get ketchup all over your fingers. So it's nice to have a 3rd cup that's full for that type of scenario. I suppose it's a bit wasteful because I probably won't finish that 3rd cup. The 4th cup is for my friend, who doesn't like ketchup as much as I do, I guess. But he had a cup of that special sauce for his fries, too.

Hm, I have more to say about that. You can avoid using 3 cups if you "open up" 2 cups. This is a neat trick that I learned from some of my food enthusiast friends. To do this, just grab the sides of the cup, and pull the sides apart, and you'll get sort of a shallow bowl, as some of the folds that hold the cup walls together come undone. This way they hold more ketchup and also your fingers don't get messy when you're holding the small fries. This is also more environmentally friendly because you're using less paper. In-N-Out recently switched to those plastic boxes instead of serving their food in paper boxes on plastic trays. This probably cuts down significantly on paper waste, and I applaud them for this. I would like to know if their food supplies are also environmentally friendly... I think I remember reading in Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser that they were, but this I cannot say I remember for a fact.

"open up" the ketchup cups? hmm.. i'll have to try that next time. i usually just use 2 cups and squeeze the bottoms of them towards the end (like toothpaste).
